Seguindo a trilha já iniciada com AmericanAdvertise013, 014, 015 e 016, Paulo W continua pesquisando jornais e revistas norte-americanos do século XIX para publicar mais fontes de uma coleção inteiramente dedicada a tipografia e publicidade do período. Uma fonte humanística renascentista baseada na obra do século XVI "Il Perfetto Escritore" do mestre calígrafo Giovan Francesco Cresci, publicada em 1570. Cresci escreveu:

"If I possessed the defect and the ugly appearance which they display in their writing: for, on account of the poor constitution of their fingers, they hold the pen in such a distorted fashion that, when they write, they reveal to anyone watching them letters that are ragged, uneven, and shaky, and lines so twisted that their pupils cannot possibly derive any profit from them. If they had any sense at all, it would be their duty not only to run away and hide themeselves because of these faults and never let themselves be seen in the act of writing, but also to stop boasting that they have taught to others an art, which, in point of truth, they have never been able to master properly by reason of these defects."

DeutschePosterSteinschrift

Esta fonte, uma sans serif, vem somar-se a série Deutsche Poster que é fruto de pesquisas nos cartazes publicitários alemães publicados nas décadas de 20 a 30. Um pouco da Bauhaus enquanto ela pôde manter-se de portas abertas.

O fascínio que as blackletters exercem em Paulo W o está levando a produzir uma coleção bem extensa deste tipos. Aqui dois lançamentos de capitais históricas no estilo "textura", uma versal e outra capitular. Detalhe especial para o design altamente geométrico destas fontes.

"I free digitized and to revivalize "16th Century Gothic MS", from an old and rare book about letters. I rename this layout to "Gothic16CG". Is not a typeface by a foundrye. I like very much this digitalization, because the geometrical no curves shapes wich I created."

Primeira fonte da nova familia HostetlerFetteUltfraktur, fonte histórica resgatada digitalmente por Paulo W. Nos próximos meses a família estará sendo expandida.

Paulo W says:

"I digitized and to revivalize UltFraktur by the extinct Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei, a German/Swiss foundry established in 1790 and based in Basel/Münchenstein. Many of its shares were acquired by D. Stempel in 1927. In the Luc Devroye site this foundry is on the Extinct Foundries of the 18th century page. This design is traditional. This UltFraktur I renamed like Hostetler UltFraktur in homage to the classical type specimen book from Hostetler. The ornamental frame who completes the font is two hundred years earlyer."

Luc Devroye tell us about Rudolf Hostettler (your book is the source from any of my fonts): He was a swiss type designer. Author of "The Printer's Terms", designed by Jan Tschichold. And of Technical Terms of the Printing Industry (5th edition was printed in 1995) and Type: eine Auswahl guter Drucktypen ; 80 Alphabete klassischer und moderner Schriften (Teufen, Ausser-Rhoden: Niggli, 1958). He also wrote "Type: A Selection of Types" (1949, fgm books, R. Hostettler, E. Kopley, H. Strehler Publ., St. Gallen and London) in which he highlights type made by European houses such as Haas, Enschedé, Deberny and Nebiolo. Jost Hochuli wrote his biography,

Akademie der bildenden Künste Stuttgart. F.H.E. Schneidler work at The Akademie der bildenden Künste Stuttgart has produced quite a few type designers in its history. The present report is from the book "Handsatzschriften des Instituts für Buchgestaltung an der Staatlichen Akademie der bildenden Künste Stuttgart von Walter Brudi, J.V. Cissarz F.H.E. Schneidler und Walter Veit." For Schneidler, the best source is the book by Max Caflisch, Albert Kapr, Antonia Weiss, and Hans Peter Willberg entitled "F.H. Ernst Schneidler Schriftentwerfer Lehrer Kalligraph SchumacherGebler," München, 2002. Schneidler ever was the most famous type designer, in Stuttgart, who was also a renowned calligrapher.
