etimology of "surveillance"

 


The word "surveillance" originated from the French word "surveiller," which means "to watch over". The French word "surveillance" means "oversight, supervision, a watch". The word "surveil" is also derived from the French word "surveiller" and the Latin word "vigilare," which means "to watch". The Latin word "vigil" means "watchful". The word "surveillance" was borrowed into English from French in the late 18th or early 19th century. The word "surveillance" refers to close observation of an individual or group, continuous monitoring of disease occurrence, or an investigation process by which police gather evidence about crimes, or suspected crime, through continued observation of persons or places.
