The formation of the ocean is a topic of interest for many scientists. Here are some theories and explanations
1. The ocean formed billions of years ago when water vapor and other gases were expelled from the molten rocks of the Earth to the atmosphere surrounding the cooling planet. After the Earth's surface had cooled to a temperature below the boiling point of water, rain began to fall, and as the water drained into the great hollows in the Earth's surface, the primeval ocean came into existence.
2. Researchers think that the oceans formed as a result of a process known as “degassing.” When the Earth was first formed, its temperature was well above the boiling point for water. Because of this, there was no liquid water on Earth. Instead, all water was in the form of a gas. It rained for centuries, and almost every ounce of water on the surface of the Earth had to fall from the sky. Another theory is that carbonaceous chondrites, which are essentially meteorites that hold a lot of water, kept pelting into the surface of the Earth after it cooled down. This distributed water in large amounts to the Earth, which eventually made up the oceans.
3. The planet eventually started to cool below the boiling point of water, allowing the early ocean to form around 3.8 billion years ago. Water began to condense in the atmosphere and rain down in the basins on the Earth’s landscape. The forces of gravity prevented the water from leaving the planet.
4. The ocean's water came from rocks inside the newly forming Earth. As the molten rocks cooled, they released water vapor and other gases. Eventually, the water vapor condensed and covered the crust with a primitive ocean. Today, hot gases from the Earth's interior continue to produce new water at the bottom of the ocean.
5. By about 4 billion years ago, the first permanent accumulations of water were present on Earth, forming the oceans and other bodies of water. Water moves between these different reservoirs through the water cycle. Water is evaporated from the oceans, lakes, streams, the surface of the land, and plants (transpiration) by solar energy. It then condenses in the atmosphere and falls back to the surface as precipitation.
6. According to one theory of ocean formation, Earth was formed with water. As the planet was coming together, water was present.
In summary, the ocean formed billions of years ago through a gradual process of cooling and the accumulation of water vapor and other gases. Rain eventually fell and filled the basins on Earth's surface, creating the primeval ocean. Today, the ocean continues to be shaped by tectonic plate movements and other geological processes.
